idea on a lifehacks blog

with one comment

I despise lifehacks. They are usually filled with motivational/inspirational crap that my Mom could tell me. And they get the ad revenue.

I usually don’t learn anything from lifehacks blogs. That’s why I’m thinking about starting my own, a lifehacks blog with real substance. Surely there are blogs that have original content, but from what I see it’s usually just an amalgam of other people’s websites! That’s seriously cheap. Furthermore, the authors often go uncredited. That’s a real downer.

Okay. So it looks like most lifehacks blogs have a ‘day’ scheme going on. Like you know, Monday is ‘tech day’ where they spill out tech information that I could have read elsewhere. I’m being a little harsh.

Anyway, I’m afraid that I’m going to become one of these shallow lifehacks blogs. Oh well.

Here is my day scheme -
Fun roundup: this is the day that I post all the funny stuff, comics, games, cool videos, interesting stuff, etc that I’ve seen on the net. In other words, stuff with entertainment value.
Sci/Tech: recent discoveries and inventions in science and technology. at least, the ones I find interesting. This includes computer hacks, diy projects, stuff on psychology. also, good articles and websites to read and keep up with.
Health and Fitness: here is where I’ll post good health advice. advice I find helpful, anyway. how to eat well, how to relax more, how to exercise better, etc.
Philosophy day: how could I have a lifehacks blog without a philosophy day? ludicrous! anyway, here I’ll cover snapshots of famous people in history, some interesting articles and quotes, also a tidbit of my own foray into philosophy… yeah… just stuff that I think induces deep, deep thoughts…
Money day: I know absolutely nothing about money. It’s embarrassing. I’ll break down career advice, money and economics.
Global Issues day: I want to tackle political stuff, with some analysis.  This also includes history, world events, etc. I wager that I can get at least a fraction of an issue every week.
Lifestyle tips: this is kind of a miscellaneous column, where I’ll just have tips about the household stuff (like how to clean), relationships, etc. I reckon most of this will come out of my own experiences. I guess this is pretty much where all the stuff I don’t know where to categorize goes. :-P

Some other interesting ideas (which I don’t know if I will put into effect were I to create a lifehacks blog)

  • having a theme every week or month, where I focus on certain key issues over others to my own liking.
  • in each post, talking about my personal experiences in the subject (were I to have any) within the last week. also I can mention stuff that is happening with friends and family, and links/emails that have been sent to me that I find particularly useful.
  • I guess overall I would want to make my lifehack blog a ‘personal’ experience. I don’t want to cater to a wide audience. I mostly just want to give the advice that I think is important whether or not it is relevant to other people. Anyway, at least I hope I will capture some niche.
  • in lieu of other days, I’ll have to mix it up a little bit. for instance, I can have a special interview day or a book appreciation day or something. Sticking to a strict schedule is not very fun. I’m not sure though how I’d manage when to have a special day. Maybe once every two weeks or so? Also, I guess I’ll have to shift days around to my liking; for instance, if I get really into music then I’ll need to establish a music day.

Anyway, these are just some stray thoughts were I to actually begin a blog like that. Will I? I don’t know. But I’d like to.

edit: some more thoughts I’m having about a lifehacks blog.

so I definitely want a way to post the cool stuff I find on the net. music, comics, games, funny images and videos, etc. movies that I’ve seen and reviews. stuff like that. this is kind of like an entertainment day.

global issues day is important to me too. the problem is there is so much stuff going on that it’s impossible to cover even the most important stories in detail. it makes more sense to have a running update of current happenings. it’s going to be difficult to churn out something unique every week, so I’ll have to make this to my own discretion without a time table.

science and technology is a whole league of it’s own. there are some articles of note that I will find, stuff that I want to keep up with like the hadron collider experiment. new discoveries in science are sometimes interesting but shallow in depth. if I want to consider them, I’d have to dig below the surface and know more about them. this is probably not something I can do on a weekly basis either.

as interesting as programming is, I really don’t want to cover it. I can cover interesting software as part of my science and technology. in fact, I may have to divide the two.

I’m very interested with health and fitness. I’ll mostly cover things that most concern me, like how to handle stress and how to get in shape. I guess most of this will be my own personal goals, like doing 100 push ups.

I said finance is something I really don’t know about. it’s true. I’ll have to consider economic stuff.
